What you need to know about Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP meme coin
Hunter Biden, the son of former U.S. President Joe Biden, is launching the LAPTOP meme coin on the Base blockchain on September 9.
According to official project documents, the token combines internet culture, politics, and prediction-based tokenomics. It will launch with a fixed supply of 1 billion tokens, with 20% of the supply allocated to airdrops.
The project takes its name from the Hunter Biden laptop controversy, which emerged during the 2020 U.S. presidential election after a laptop allegedly belonging to Biden was abandoned at a Delaware repair shop.

The device became the subject of years of political debate and media scrutiny over its contents, including emails, business dealings, and personal files.
LAPTOP is being issued through Phoenix Veritas Foundation and Phoenix Veritas Ventures Ltd on Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network.
One of the token’s defining features is a prediction-based system that allocates 30% of the supply to 30 political, crypto, cultural, and project-related events.
Depending on the outcome of those predictions, the associated tokens will either be burned or redirected to charitable causes. Another 30% of the supply is allocated to the founders.
Losses on TRUMP meme coin
The remaining 20%, equivalent to 200 million tokens, has been earmarked for airdrops. The first distribution includes 20 million tokens for eligible traders who recorded losses on President Donald Trump’s Official Trump (TRUMP) meme coin.
Participating exchanges and trading platforms will determine how those allocations are distributed.
Another 40 million tokens are reserved for subscribers of Hunter Biden’s Where’s Hunter? Substack who joined before September 6, with allocations weighted according to subscription tier.
A further 40 million tokens will be distributed equally among eligible subscribers to Andrew Callaghan’s Channel 5 mailing list who joined before August 21.
The final 100 million tokens have been set aside for future airdrops, with eligibility requirements yet to be announced.
Recipients of the initial distribution will have 30 days after the token generation event to claim their allocation, after which any unclaimed tokens will be permanently burned.
Controversy around LAPTOP launch
Notably, the launch has also generated controversy beyond the laptop saga itself. Critics argue that celebrity and politically affiliated meme coins often allow public figures to monetize their notoriety while exposing retail investors to highly speculative assets.
The debate intensified after the boom-and-bust performance of several high-profile political tokens, including President Donald Trump’s TRUMP coin, which saw substantial losses for many buyers after its initial surge.
Some crypto commentators have also questioned whether Hunter Biden’s decision to launch a meme coin contradicts past criticism of political figures profiting from digital assets.
